Private Tour of Avebury and Stonehenge with Chauffeurs UK
The purpose of Stonehenge, the world's most famous stone circle, remains a mystery. Its origins go back as far as the Pyramids. What today's visitor sees are the mighty remains of a sequence of monuments erected between 3000 and 1000 BC. Most well-known are the trilithons, large door-frame-shaped arrangements, made up of two standing stones, topped by a lintel stone which is actually fixed by mortice-and-tenon joints. The stones are aligned so that on the midsummer and midwinter solstices the sun shines straight through the circle onto the central Heel Stone. The famous stone circle at Avebury, a World Heritage Site, partly encompasses the pretty village of Avebury. Many of the stones were re-erected in the 1930s by the archaeologist Alexander Keiller, who uncovered the true wonder of one of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe. You can even walk right up to the stones and touch them! Also part of the Avebury World Heritage Site is the West Kennet Long Barrow. It is one of the largest, most impressive and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Built in around 3400 BC, and used by a whole community for at least a thousand years.
Silbury Hill was built about 4,400 years ago in the Neolithic period and is the largest man-made mound in Europe. The enduring presence of Silbury Hill in the landscape has inspired myths and legends as people have sought to explain its purpose. Prices per vehicle, not per person
