Private Tour of Winchester, Stonehenge and Corfe Castle with Chauffeurs UK
Tour Winchester, once the Royal Capital of England. Begun in 1079 in the Romanesque style, Winchester Cathedral is at the heart of King Alfred's Wessex and a diocese which once stretched from the River Thames to the Channel Islands. Its bishops were men of enormous wealth and power. The Cathedral is also the burial place of Jane Austen as well as many Kings, Queens and Saints.Winchester is also well known for the Great Hall of its castle, which was built in the 12th century. The Great Hall was rebuilt, sometime between 1222-1235, and still exists in this form. It is famous for King Arthur's Round Table, which has hung in the hall from at least 1463. The purpose of Stonehenge, the world's most famous stone circle, remains a mystery. Its origins go back as far as the Pyramids. What today's visitor sees are the mighty remains of a sequence of monuments erected between 3000 and 1000 BC. Most well-known are the trilithons, large door-frame-shaped arrangements, made up of two standing stones, topped by a lintel stone which is actually fixed by mortice-and-tenon joints. The stones are aligned so that on the midsummer and midwinter solstices the sun shines straight through the circle onto the central Heel Stone. Corfe Castle is one of Britain's most majestic ruins, a 1000 year-old castle, rising above the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. The castle is steeped in history with many stories of treachery and treason. At different times a favourite Royal retreat and also prison the castle was defended during the Civil War by the prudent and virtuous Lady Bankes until it fell due to betrayal from within.Prices per vehicle, not per person
