Houses of Parliament
![]() The Houses of Parliament or, more correctly, The Palace of Westminster, is certainly one of the city's most famous and photogenic sights. The most romantic view of the complex is from the opposite (south) side of the river, a vista especially dramatic at night when the storybook spires, pinnacles, and towers of the great building are floodlighted green and gold - a fairy-tale vision only missing the presence of Peter Pan and Wendy on their way to Never-Never Land.
This masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture was the work of Charles Barry, whose design was chosen in a competition after the old Palace of Westminster burned down in 1834. The only remaining part of the medieval palace is Westminster Hall, just inside the main visitors' entrance. It was built in 1097 and has an elaborate 14th-century hammerbeam roof. The chimes of Big Ben, the huge bell in the clock tower, are renowned worldwide through being broadcast on BBC radio.
